Kidney Cyst

More often than not kidney cysts are a type called simple kidney individual cysts which are round sacks of fluid that form on or inside the kidney. Simple cysts do not damage the kidneys or affect kidney function.  Polycystic kidney disease, another type of kidney cyst disease. It is an inherited condition that causes cysts to form in the kidneys causing progress damage to the organ as they grow in size and number. Another type of cysts are complex cysts. These need to be monitored intermittently for changes that could become cancerous.

Causes:

  • Cysts may start to grow when a tubule in the kidney is blocked, swells up, and fills with fluid.
  • Microscopic diverticula form in weakened areas of the tubules and fill with fluid which fill the cyst.
  • There are complications that may occur because of the cyst such as, the cyst becoming infected causing fever and pain. The cyst may burst causing severe pain in the back and flanks. Over time cysts multiply and grow causing disfunction of normal tissue around them.

Symptoms:

  • Dull pain in the back or side.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Upper abdominal pain.
  • Swelling of the abdomen.
  • Urinating more often than usual.
  • Blood in the urine (visible or invisible).
  • Dark Urine.
  • Kidney failure.
