Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Is a gradual loss of kidney function resulting in the kidney’s failure to filter toxins in the blood.

Causes of CKD: 

  • Diabetes- type 1 or type 2
  • High blood pressure
  • Glomerulonephritis- inflammation in the glomerulus
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Lupus – autoimmune disease
  • Vesicoureteral reflux- urine flows back into the kidneys
  • Cancer – can lead to kidney failure over time.
  • Renal artery stenosis
  • Loss of kidney by trauma

Symptoms:

  • Symptoms include:
  • Blood in urine
  • Protein in urine
  • Hypertension- high blood pressure
  • Anemia
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of weight
  • Edema-swelling of feet and ankles
  • Acidosis – acid build up in blood
